On December 17, 2021, the announcement ceremony of the establishment of “Plastics and Health Action Partnership” (PHA) took place in Hanoi, with the participation of more than 100 delegates from Government agencies, national and international organizations,. NGOs, private enterprises, and research institutes.

The launching ceremony of the “Plastic and Health Action Partnership” (PHA) is one of the activities launched within the framework of the project “Local Solutions for Plastic Pollution (LSPP)” funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“Plastics and Health Action Partnership” (PHA) with the participation of organizations and initiatives related to plastic waste such as National Plastics Action Partnership Program (NPAP), Zero Waste Alliance Vietnam Wastewater (VZWA), the National Coordination Office of the Vietnam One Health Network of Universities (VOHUN), etc. was established to connect existing networks and initiatives in Plastics and Health, assist in mobilizing technical and financial resources, share implementation experiences, contribute to policy advocacy related to plastic waste and health, and enhance the effectiveness of initiatives.

In Vietnam, it is estimated that about 25 million tons of domestic solid waste are generated each year, of which the proportion of plastic accounts for 10-20% (about 2.5 to 5 million tons of plastic waste generated each year). Therefore, the establishment of a network like PHA is very necessary to be able to gather resources from international partners, government agencies, NGOs, Research Institutes, Universities to join hands to reduce plastic waste, an alarming problem in Vietnam.

As a member of PHA, the Institute for Circular Economy Development (ICED), Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City will contribute to the network’s activities such as advocacy on plastic waste and health, building a database on plastic waste pollution as well as carrying out communication activities to raise awareness about the link between plastic and health, and deploying pilot models to reduce plastic pollution in several localities throughout the country.
