On August 18th, 2021, a meeting between the Institute for Circular Economy Development (ICED), Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, and Vietnamese – RKW-Group Vietnam was held to explore collaboration in plastic waste collection and recycling.

For this meeting, ICED was represented by Associate Professor NGUYEN Hong Quan – Director of ICED, Ms. DANG Thuong Huyen, Mr. BUI Le Thanh Khiet, Mr. LE Ba Nhat Minh, and Ms. TRAN Thi Diem Phuc while RKW-Group Vietnam was represented by Mr. Antony Taing, who is a Managing Director of RKW-Group in Vietnam and serves as vice-chairman of Circular Economy Working Group of Green Growth Sector Committee of the European Chambre of Commerce in Vietnam.

In the meeting, ICED and RKW-Group discussed collaboration towards a circular economy in relevant topics such as plastic packaging waste recycling, business models, linkages between digitalization and circular economy. Prof. Nguyen was also pleased to share ICED current projects while Mr. Antony presented the strengths of his company in the field of recycling in HDPE, film, and plastic bags, etc. Then both sides discussed in-depth potential collaboration, pooled and leveraged each other’s resources to jointly develop projects and research towards the principles of the circular economy. Mr. Antony also gave a few comments on the Draft of the Extended Producer Responsibility Decree of Vietnam and the lack of standards for biodegradable materials in the Vietnamese Environmental Protection Law.

The meeting achieved good results as expected, ICED and RKW-Group agreed on a cooperation roadmap soon, especially in the field of packaging waste collection and recycling and research projects.
