On March 24th, 2021, the Institute for Circular Economy Development (ICED) (Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh city) and Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP) (University Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia) convened an online meeting (via Microsoft Teams) to discuss potential research collaborations between the two institutes.

Meeting attendants from the ICED were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong QUAN (Director), Dr. Nguyen Kieu Lan Phuong, Dr. Le Quang Dung, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tu and Dr. Tran Thien Khanh. From the AKUATROP, Prof. Ts. Dr. Su Shiung LAM, Assoc. Prof. Meisam Tabatabaei, Dr. Wan Adibah Wan Mahari participated in the meeting.

Assoc. Prof. Quan started the meeting by introducing the vision, targets, and main activities of the institute. Prof. Lam also presented his research team and current research interests and international collaborations. Both parties had a successful discussion on several topics:

(1) Potential collaborative researches: development of research ideas/proposals on the application of pyrolysis techniques in converting plastic wastes and/or water hyacinth into energy and biofuels production; circular economy in sustainable aquaculture (e.g., net-zero aquaculture biorefinery), support tools of assessing potential environmental impacts in industries (e.g., life cycle assessment, carbon footprint), and education for behavior change to improve waste management, and publication;

(2) Potential research grant application

(3) Education: opportunities of student exchanges;

(4) Preparation of letter of intent (LOI), MoU or MoA.

Both parties consented to develop collaborative research activities based on such topics in the future. Prof. Lam suggested that both could start a concrete project on developing mobile apps engaging students and the public to improve waste management by applying a matching fund. Assoc. Prof. Quan agreed with prof. Lam’s suggestion that the ICED will seek the fund to mark the starting-point of a collaborative effort. Finally, ICED and AQUATROP agreed that they would set up further meetings to discuss specific topics separately, the applied researches on pyrolysis techniques to generate energy from waste and green aquaculture for solid collaboration.
